The old Vault of the Call

In medieval times, these streets Carrer de Sant Sever and Baixada de Santa Eulalia were one single street, Carrer Volta del Call (the Vault of the Jewish Quarter). This street went from the current Carrer del Bisbe up to the Roman wall. That section of the wall was demolished in 1394.

Volta del Call means Vault of the Jewish quarter. A vault covered the western part of the street. For a long time it was thought that this street was part of the Jewish quarter because some of the houses were owned by Jewish people. But today it is known that it wasn’t within the boundaries of the quarter. Before the pogrom in 1931, the house at the corner of the street (Sant Sever – Sant Domenech del Call) was owned by Enoch Saporta, who was a Jewish born in Bellpuig and had family in Cervera. The Catalan Jewish community used to move around often and owned properties in several cities. After being owned by several people, the house was rebuilt by Francesc Mir i Pujades in the 17th century. Some features from its past have been kept like the arch that dates from the Middle Ages.
