In search of a Castle

You are right in front of the old Castell Vell (Old Castle) in Barcelona. First was the residence of the Viscount of Barcelona and, later, the delegate of the king. From here dispensed justice. Earlier, as you see in the picture, here were some baths.

The family has been making candles Subirà since 1761, with the best bee ICER paraffins.

You are standing in front of the eldest wax shop in Barcelona, it is 250 years old!! It is managed by Jordi Subirà. Very long time ago, during the 4th and 5th centuries AD, the centers of power of the city were moved. The government left the forum (currently Plaça Sant Jaume) to come to this place, what it was the north-east side of Barcino. From this point westwards, a basilica, the first counts’ houses were built, and in the 6th century, the new public baths were erected. This area became the political epicenter during the Middle Ages. In this spot is where the Castell Vell (old castle) was, and where the viscount of Barcelona, and afterwards, the king’s vaguer lived (the veguer was the head of the vegueries, that they were the feudal administrative territorial jurisdiction of Catalonia during the Middle Ages and into the Modern Era). From this site is where justice was made on behalf of the king. The veguer was also in control of the market that was outside the walls’ boundaries next to the plaça del Blat (wheat), nowadays named plaça de l’Angel. Little is known about the castle, but it is most likely that the main entrance was from plaça del Rei (Kings’ square).

In its early years, it was a fashion boutique, until another family took over making it the chandlery she is today. The family has been making candles Subirà since 1761, with the best bee ICER paraffins.

Today candles are decorative pieces rather, but at the time of the founding of this place met the basic function of the inadequate lighting of the time.

This chandlery Baroque atmosphere is the oldest in Barcelona. No doubt an iconic corner of the city. Preserves intact the exquisite decoration which was formerly a high fashion boutique.

Sign into this store is like traveling back in time. It’s a real treat visually see the decor and the immense diversity of handmade candles they offer their customers.
