A street that almost disappears

In the late nineteenth century tracing Llibreteria Street was in danger. The architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner had submitted a project that consisted in demolishing the houses that were behind the cathedral to display columns Paradís Roman street. The layout of carrer Llibreteria is 2030 years old, a lot of centuries old for an ancient axis of the Roman city (North East o South West). Together with moder day carrer del Call, it was 282 meters long, about 1000 steps. Towards the ending of the 19th century, this layout was almost completely wiped down from the map. At the time, there were a lot of projects to change the city and one of the ideas was to “give some air” to the Cathedral and open up a big space around it to make it more visible. In 1879, the famous architect Lluís Domenec I Muntaner presented his project that included demolishing of a lot of blocks behind the cathedral’s apse, open up a big square and keep, just in the middle of it, the four Roman columns that can be now seen at carrer Paradís. A famous priest, Mossen Cinto Verdaguer, defended this idea in his writings, Oda a Barcelona:

“Oh, knock down that curtain of houses that separates the statue of Don Jaume from its Royal Tinell. In the middle of this square, that it will be like no other, when the traveler sees the three Hercules’ columns, he will believe he is seeing the three Graces making an intertwined crown dancing in your land”.
