Let’s go back on time to the medieval years when two of the busiest city institutions were at carrer Freneria: the hospital and the public house. In the 11th century there are two documented hospitals in Barcelona, and the one in this street was named Hospital d’en Guitart. The hospital’s patrimony grew considerably thanks to testament donations and a lot of buildings belonged to the hospital. These properties generated an extra income and the institution could work helping the poor, sick persons and pilgrims. A hundred years later, in 1145, the count Ramon Berenguer IV decided to turn these buildings around the hospital into houses and workshops to hand them over to artisans. The public house on the street, alfòndec in Catalan, is documented since 1258. The alfòndecs were owned by the king, and they used to be in commercial towns. They were free buildings where foreigners and merchants could stay and also keep their goods in them. In this same place where the store is, there used to be a very famous restaurant called El Tinell.
If you’re looking to take a good memory of the city, and get inspired by Gaudi interesting objects and monuments of Barcelona, you will find it in this store. J & M has ornaments, shirts, small ceramic figurines, handbags, scarves, postcards and a special section of the FCB … if you love the club, here get the shirts, scarves, flags and even vuvuzela.
A specialty of the house is divided into two and also the souvenir shop, a small store where you can buy drinks and food products.
