Charles II the Bewitched

It was believed that the king (pictured) had received a spell. He suffered countless diseases throughout their lives. In order to plead his cure, in the main streets of the city civic celebrations took place.

Store specializes in selling all kinds of fabrics: wool, viscose, cotton, silk, and curtains. Today offers fashion for women with fine fabrics and classic designs.

The street festivals organised by the government weren’t to everyone’s taste. The neighbours at carrer Llibreteria had to suffer quiet a lot of them and one of the biggest celebrations was to pray for the king’s poor health, Carles II l’Embruixat (bewitched), he was weak and a sickly person. In 1696, at the end of October, “in the middle of the street, there was a triumphal arch, holding a factory representing a castle, and the light passed through the door, creating several figures”. Do you think the residents at carrer Llibreteria were happy about it? It needs to be taken into account that Llibreteria was essentially a commercial street, therefore all this ornamentation was an obstacle that disturbed the circulation of people and goods. And not only that, but most of the time, the traders had to defray the festivals themselves!
