You are in front of Estanc Travitabac, a newsagent that has been recently open, managed by Miguel Prit. This is a very interesting spot for historians. During the 1350’s decade, a few houses were demolished after some works were carried out at the market and in plaça del Blat (currently plaça de l’Angel). The reason for this was to open up the plaça de la Fusteria and extend the market – at the intersection between the two streets, Jaume I and Sotstinent Navarro. The building works were so grand that even the Consell de Barcelona had to collect money with a special tax. At the time there was an oven here, forn dels Arcs, also known as Garrofar, in carrer Especiers (spicers) that disappeared when the block was knocked down. It is likely that the entrance was at the currently plaça de l’Angel. Community ovens were essential stores at the time, entire families brought their food and bread to be cooked at high temperature.
The location has been carefully refurbished vestiges of its history. The building was originally a prison and in the basement there is a stone oven and utensils that were used for cooking food in an old oven 1769.
On the first floor is the shop where you can buy all the products and accessories necessary for the smoker. You also have gift items, crafts and curios.
In the basement, the store houses an exclusive club smoking (in the bowels of the old furnace), which still retains the rustic stone. An ideal setting for tasting the products menu full of imported cigars and fine drinks
Travitabac organizes tastings of products. ALSO has a giant screen for audiovisuals, a wide selection of classical music and the soothing sound of an indoor fountain to welcome its partners.
