One of the gates to enter the Call (Jewish quarter)

The main street of the Call was Carrer de Sant Domenec but at the time it was known as Carrer Carnisseria (Butcher), Major Synagoge or Major School. This street was the entry to the Call, Jewish Quarter.

Creative workshop and showroom of multifunctional bags and leather accessories. Patchwork work. Furniture and lighting design.
One of the two gates to enter the Call Major was at the junction of Carrer Sant Domenec with Carrer del Call. It is documented that above this gate raised one of the highest towers of the city. The gates to enter the Call were at both ends of Carrer del Call, because it was one of the entries to the Roman Barcino and eased the entry and exit to the city and the Call. The gates were kept by a porterious, an institutional role. He was the gate keeper and also acted as the representative of the Jewish community. The porterii were prominent members of the community; for instance the rent of their house was paid with public money. In the 14th century, the Christian community started imposing their laws at the gates for the Jewish community and started using these gates as a point of division and segregation. In 1391 this is where the house of Estruc Bonanasc was. He is documented since 1371 as helping the doctor Saltell Cabrit in Carcassone and France. The building that lays here today was built at the end of the 19th century, its façade was renewed and later it was opened to a small square, Manuel Ribé, after the houses beside it were bombarded during the Spanish Civil War.

In the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, in the main street of the old Jewish Quarter (Call Major), where trades were a vital part of the social net of the time, this showroom and workshop are designed to be seem by the public view.

Zoen LDA is a creative laboratory, where we design, create prototypes and products are made with great attention to detail using traditional tools and techniques combined with the latest modern systems.
This small family run business, whose leitmotif is ‘creative research’, was opened in 2009 by two entrepreneurs from the field of visual arts and architecture.

In the interior design of this unique site, everything has been made by the owners own hands. From the entrance door and window final touches to the furniture and lamps.

By using ‘noble’ materials and maximizing light and space, the room is integrated in a pleasant setting, making visible the craft work and exhibit the final product designed with quality, comfort and functionality.
