During the first half of the 19th century, a lot of booksellers were still working in this street. In 1838, the majority of the 37 booksellers registered in the city had their shops here in Llibreteria. The stores also held “reading clubs”, that were private libraries that also worked as meeting and discussion rooms. In this same building, Tomàs Gorchs worked as a bookseller and also converted one of the rooms of his store into a “reading room”. The baron of Maldà wrote about them in 1799: “The bookshops are found in both sides of the street, one opposite the other one, and although some of them are solitary, others hold discussion gatherings (…). There are always some members of the group, that know where the evil lies, because in those meetings they talk about everything that it is happening in Barcelona and outside Barcelona.
